Ankle instability occurs when the ligaments that support the ankle become weakened or damaged, often due to repeated sprains or previous injuries. This can lead to the ankle “giving way,” pain, swelling, and difficulty walking on uneven surfaces. Over time, untreated instability may increase the risk of further sprains, chronic discomfort, and long-term joint problems.
At Jonathan Larholt Podiatric Specialist, we take a thorough approach to assessing ankle instability. This includes a detailed examination of the foot and ankle, gait analysis, and imaging if required, to understand the underlying cause and severity.
Treatment is tailored to each patient and may include:
Targeted rehabilitation exercises to strengthen the ankle and surrounding muscles.
Supportive orthotics or bracing to stabilise the ankle during activity.
Activity modification and guidance on safe return to sports or daily routines.
In more severe cases, surgical options may be considered to repair or reconstruct damaged ligaments.
Early intervention is important to prevent recurrent injuries and maintain mobility. With the right care, many patients experience a significant improvement in stability, pain reduction, and confidence in walking or sports.
